Your guide to Scooter & Powerchair Insurance

Mobility equipment offers vital independence to people with mobility impairments, so it’s essential to have them properly insured. This guide tells you everything you should know about insuring your mobility equipment.

Scooters and powered wheelchairs are generally separated in to two main categories, Class 2 and Class 3.

Class 2 mobility scooters are for use on pavements only – except where there is no pavement, meaning the user has to drive on the road. These scooters have a maximum speed of 4mph. Class 2 scooters do not need to be registered and you do not need a licence to use one.

Class 3 mobility scooters can be driven on the road, they have a maximum speed of 8mph with a switch to limit them to 4mph when driving on the pavement. They will also have a full lighting kit including Indicators and Hazard lights. You must be over 14 years of age to drive a class 3 mobility scooter and they must be registered with the DVLA. Again, you do not require any form of licence to drive one, however Mobility & Lifestyle will always ensure you are given an assessment for suitability and some tuition at the time of purchase or handover.

It is not a legal requirement to have insurance for your powered mobility equipment, as it would be for any other motor vehicle on the road.

However, here at Mobility & Lifestyle, we would always recommend you take out a suitable insurance policy to cover you against Third Party liability claims and in the event the equipment is stolen or damaged, particularly if you plan to use your equipment outside of the home.

If you only use your equipment around the home then it should be covered under your home contents insurance policy provided the value of it doesn’t exceed the single item limit set out in your policy. It’s always worth checking with your home insurance provider to ensure your equipment would be covered in the event of it being stolen or damaged.

If you intend to use your scooter or powered wheelchair out and about then it’s worth considering a specific insurance policy to cover you for third party claims, accidental damage and theft. These type of insurance policies will normally come with a 24 hour 7 days a week breakdown service too, so can be invaluable to ensure you get home safely in the event of a breakdown, puncture or battery failure. The Third party element of the insurance policy will cover you if you accidentally injure somebody or damage their property whilst using your powered mobility equipment.
